What makes a book blurb work

A blurb is the few sentences a reader reads between your cover and chapter one. Here's what a strong one does:

Lead with the hook. What makes this story different? Put it in the first line.

Show the stakes. What does the character want, and what's in the way?

Don't spoil. Tease — don't summarize the ending.

Keep it short. Two to four sentences is plenty; longer blurbs lose readers.

End with a question or a pull. Leave the reader wanting the first page.
